Carys Underwood is a cellist from West Sussex, currently studying at the Royal College of Music under Richard Lester. They progressed through the West Sussex Youth Orchestra and then to the Royal College of Music Junior Department, learning with the late Michal Kaznowski. They have performed in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Cadogan Hall.
Carys has benefited from masterclasses from renowned cellists such as Alexander Baillie, Laura van der Heijden and Rebecca Guilliver. They have been a regular member of the RCM Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras, and the St Endellion Festival Orchestra last summer, working with Anthony Negus, Paul Daniel and Olivia Clarke. In June 2024, they won both the Overall Cello Prize as well as the Unaccompanied Bach Prize in the RCM Cello Competition. Carys is the cellist of the Seion Quartet, winning the 2024 RCM String Quartet Competition and a Hans Keller Ensemble in Residency for 2024/2025 and has been fortunate to receive coaching from the Marmen, Doric and Brodsky Quartets. The Seion Quartet enjoy a variety of opportunities in London, a highlight being a performance at Buckingham Palace. They are excited for their upcoming debut at Wigmore Hall in June as part of the RCM String Showcase.
